World’s darkest material will be used during the winter Olympics

The world’s blackest material, Vantablack, has been in the news for awhile now.

You’ve probably seen the video demonstrations showing how surfaces covered with this material suddenly lose the look of 3D space and become flat. You’ve probably heard that this material absorbs 99%+ of light that touches it, making any discrepancies of the surface almost indistinguishable.

Asif Khan, the architect responsible for constructing the Olympic park’s entrance, chose to use this material in his design.

“It will be like you’re looking into the depths of space itself,” Khan described o CNN. “As you approach the building that star field will grow to fill your entire field of view, and then you’ll enter as though you’re being absorbed into a cloud of blackness.”
