Coating helps improve hockey play conditions in this icy sport

The NHL decided to partner with paint coating company PPG to help the league’s refs keep ideal hockey pucks out on the rink. PPG developed a coating to use on the outside of the puck that changes color based on temperature.

“Freezing a puck eliminates bouncing, and game officials closely monitor the puck for temperature changes that affect performance while in play. A coating that changes color when the puck is above freezing will more accurately alert the officials that it is time for a replacement” commented Dan Craig, NHL Vice President of Facilities Operations
