The NHL decided to partner with paint coating company PPG to help the league’s refs keep ideal hockey pucks out on the rink. PPG developed a coating to use on the outside of the puck that changes color based on temperature.
“Freezing a puck eliminates bouncing, and game officials closely monitor the puck for temperature changes that affect performance while in play. A coating that changes color when the puck is above freezing will more accurately alert the officials that it is time for a replacement” commented Dan Craig, NHL Vice President of Facilities Operations
